Humble Beginnings
Toyota Conquest 160i Sport the car that started it all
I was tender age of 8 when it all started my dad bought a 1996 Toyota Conquest 160i Sport. It was the first car in our family to have fuel injection and power steering and air conditioning. At the time it just started to get rare and there was only two I knew of in durban a maroon red one and a bottle green one which was ours. Come to think of it I haven't seen a 160i Sport in a long time
Well if your a Toyota fan like I was you would know it had a legendary 4afe motor. Built like an Ox it had minor flaws like the exhaust manifold cracking and oil leaks from distributor O ring seal buts that's about it. It had an impressive 77kw and 160nm or torque weighing in at 960kg. Mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox it could sprint 0-100 in an impressive 8.8 seconds provided the driver was fairly competent.
Lets talk about modifications. In the early 2000s car modifications was limited here in South Africa to rims and a banging sound system. There wasn't a thing such as stance and cambered out wheels and stretched tyres #hellaflush fancy mods like we have now.
Our little 4afe was pimped out as the slang was back in the day and it had a rather interesting mod list as follows:
Exterior:
Oem side skirts
Front cressida lip
Oem extended roof spoiler
Zax classics 15 inch wheels
Interior:
Jvc head unit
Kenwood 7x10s (like if your remember these)
XL audio amp
XL audio sub
Performance:
Cowley branches and exhaust system (due to cracked manifold)
Simota induction kit
At that age I used to walk daily to school there was a few instances when my dad was on leave and I had a chance to ride to school in it and the idle was enough for the car to be the talk of the day at break time. It's an inexplicable thrill cars have me hooked. Fast forward 20 years and I'm still hooked it's about all about cars and mods. AHTechnik is an extension of that. Its my passion filtering through.
