Looking for a Family SUV maybe you need a Porsche
PORSCHE PERSUASION
Some hours ago, I had the pleasure of driving a Porsche Cayenne Diesel, and in my honest opinion, this vehicle doesn't receive the credit it deserves. Built under the esteemed "Porsche" moniker, it's always had big shoes to fill performance-wise. However, perhaps we've been looking at this vehicle from the wrong perspective. Every time you think "Porsche," you think "SPEED." Let's step back and consider it as a family car.
The V6 single-turbo diesel powerplant, capable of 193kW and 580Nm, is mated to an 8-speed Tiptronic gearbox. Power is sent to all four wheels using a sophisticated four-wheel-drive system. Why spend R350,000 to R400,000 on this instead of another used executive family SUV? The answer is quite intriguing.
After testing this car, I discovered it's an extraordinary vehicle for the price. It's no secret that the VW Touareg, Audi Q7, and Cayenne share the same platform and most parts under the skin. So, why choose the Porsche over its cousins? Simply put, specification is king! The VW Touareg has the same drivetrain but lacks features, making it challenging to find a fully specced one on the second-hand market. The Audi faces a similar issue.
The Porsche, however, comes standard with most features, making it easier to find a well-equipped model for similar money or even cheaper than a second-hand Fortuner. Plus, you get to say you drive a "Porsche."
It's not all smooth sailing, though; I'm currently in a love-hate relationship with its looks. Encasing the Porsche "Beetle" DNA into an SUV doesn't quite sit right with me. The Cayenne gathered mixed emotions wherever it went, but its looks grow on you, especially in this deep black.
Looking past that, sitting in the sumptuous leather and holding the steering wheel, you're presented with both digital and analog instrument clusters, with speedometer increments going up in 50s – and rightfully so. This is still a Porsche and needs to feel that way. The tune is much different from any VW or Audi; power comes in much later and higher up in the rev range in a massive lump, making this feel like a true Sports Utility Vehicle.
All things considered, I was wrong when this was launched. I was one of the enthusiasts who believed Porsche should only make the 911, but I finally see what they were going for – a Porsche for everyone. The wife and kids will love you for it, and most importantly, you'll love it yourself. When you find yourself late for the suburban run, you'll be glad you're in a Cayenne Diesel, gapping everyone in sight quickly, quietly, and calmly, as Porsche intended.
