The Prado goes boxy
The new Prado is thriving in the South African market, despite its controversial design, boasting an 8-month waiting list. At first glance, the design may resemble something out of a Lego catalog, giving the impression that the designer relied heavily on set squares. However, in person, the Prado exudes an imposing presence due to its massive size.
Built on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, shared with the Land Cruiser 300, this Prado defies the "mid-size SUV" label. I was up at 5am when I learnt I'd be testing the new Prado. It's always an event as Toyota sets the benchmark for capable large off roaders.
- Heated steering
- Electric folding third-row seating
- Adaptive headlights
- Digital rearview mirror
- Heads-up display
- Torsen center and rear limited-slip differential
- Fridge compartment
- Wireless charging
- Electric steering adjustment
- 10-speaker sound system
- Larger 12.3-inch screen
Despite these not being fitted, the TX model's interior is pleasant, featuring sumptuous leather trim and most modern vehicle amenities. Toyota has finally brought its interior design into the 21st century, addressing previous criticisms. The quality improvement is noticeable, thanks to advancements from its Lexus division.
However, the Prado's weight becomes apparent when climbing uphill, especially when fully laden. The 2.8 starts to labour making a strong case for hybrid assistance. Its standard Dunlop tyres prioritize on-road comfort but struggle off-road. Many owners may opt for more capable all terrain tyres, such as BFGoodrich.
While the Prado has its strengths, its design may push away some of its following, and the top-spec VX Fortuner will prove to be a thorn in its side now available in MHEV form, throws a spanner in the works. Justifying the extra R300,000 for the TX (not VX-R) is difficult, especially considering the ride in the new Face-lifted Fortuner is vastly improved
The key fob is a let down as it not weighty and very plasticky and takes away from the premium feel somewhat of the Prado. Ultimately, the new Prado TX offers a well-rounded package at R1296 300. If it where my money id save myself 300k and live with part time 4x4 and have the Fortuner 2.8gd vx auto 4x4 48v.
